This week, Richard and I headed to Fully Charged’s electric vehicle (EV) and home energy show, Everything Electric, to see the latest developments across the sectors.
What initially struck us as we strolled through London’s ExCeL venue was the sheer variety of products on display. Not only were there big-name brands displaying their latest EV cars, but the event also hosted numerous support businesses which are helping to propel the automotive industry into an electrified future. As you would expect, the EV charging point companies were there in force.
As a communications agency with expertise in the commercial vehicle (CV) sector, we were especially pleased to see the organisers had placed a bigger emphasis on CVs this year. These vans are the lifeblood of so many of the UK’s industries, and it was reassuring to see first-hand the work being done to decarbonise them. But one of them caught my attention more than the rest…
Perhaps most interesting was that in a hall full of ‘new metal’, it was ‘old metal’ that was getting plenty of attention – the stars of the show for me were Morris Commercial and Austin Motor Company. The former is selling a cute electric van that looks like it belongs on the roads of 70 years ago, while the latter is offering a retro-styled two-seater EV sports car. Both are due for launch imminently, much to the delight of the show-goers who were keen to take a look at this new twist on the established ‘electric classics’ sector.
It seems to be a new niche, not to be confused with restomods, which are entirely different as you can learn here. Morris and Austin are two ambitious start-ups taking a much-loved name from automotive history and building new EVs with old styling. We wish them every success.
All in all, the show was a positive experience and was a sign that, in spite of the difficult time the automotive sector has had in recent weeks, it is well-placed for an exciting future.
If you attended Everything Electric and we didn’t get the opportunity to speak with you, we would love to catch up. Please get in touch with us here.
