Are hashtags still #relevant?

Hashtags have been an important feature on social media for over a decade, serving as a tool to categorise content, amplify reach, and spark conversations, made popular by platforms like X (Twitter) and Instagram. However, as we move into 2025, hashtags are beginning to lose their relevance.

Social Media Search Engines

As hashtags become redundant, the importance of SEO on social media is growing. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are increasingly being used as search engines, especially by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Users now search for everything from product reviews to travel tips on these platforms, bypassing traditional search engines. This shift highlights the importance of optimising content with relevant keywords and engaging visuals that align with what users are searching for.

Hashtag Overuse and Saturation

The effectiveness of hashtags has been diluted by overuse, largely by spam accounts. Popular hashtags often become dumping grounds for irrelevant or low-quality content, reducing their value for targeted discovery. Additionally, users are growing weary of excessive hashtags in captions, viewing them as inauthentic.

Emergence of Alternative Features

Social media platforms are introducing new discovery tools, like TikTok’s "For You Page" or Instagram’s topic-based feeds, which make hashtags less critical. The algorithmic-fed feeds use features such as AI-driven captions, geotags, and built-in keyword search capabilities, which are expected to replace the need for manual tagging entirely.

While hashtags will likely still exist in 2025, they will play a far less central role in how users discover and interact with content. As platforms evolve, the way we navigate social media will increasingly depend on smarter, more seamless technologies.
